A Husband's Request

Hello!

I am back to narrate a new experience today.

A middle aged lady had seen me yesterday to get her ill-fitting denture replaced. After necessary case history and examination, I explained to her that she would require a new denture to meet the dental aesthetics and functions. I explained and discussed with her the procedures and informed her about time and monetary expenditures. After counselling session, she requested to start fabrication of the new denture right away. And so, I started with the first step of denture fabrication (making the primary impressions) yesterday. She was very happy and made advance payments as well.

Today morning, I received a call from the lady's husband requesting for an appointment to discuss something related to his wife's new denture. I had explained everything related to the new denture to his wife! What was it that he wanted to discuss? I was puzzled! So, I gave him an appointment for the same day.

The husband seemed very punctual (which is unusual with Indian patients). He arrived the dental office on-time. He appeared a little nervous when he entered my consultation cabin. I requested him to make himself comfortable in the chair and discuss whatever he wanted to without any hesitation. He felt a little confident and asked me, "How much time would it take to deliver the new denture to my wife?" Thinking that the husband is worried about his wife's edentulous look and the problems related to phonics and eating that she faces because of missing teeth, I replied with concern, "Sir, it would usually take about 10 days in the process. However, I would try my level best to expedite the procedures and deliver the denture to her by soonest." To this the man responded, "No no no.. Take your own time! Actually I wanted to meet you for the same. Can you please prolong the denture delivery time to about 1 month?" I was surprised and I exclaimed "What!" Now, the man started explaining me the real purpose for his visit. "Actually Ma'am, my wife is very conscious about her looks. She does not like her face without teeth. Hence, she avoids going out and meeting people. She has not even been to shopping malls or kitties in last 1 week! This has been such a pocket friendly deal for me. I can pay you double the fees for the denture out of what I have saved in last week... Moreover, she feels quite uncomfortable speaking without teeth. She feels very conscious about her pronunciations as well. Hence, she avoids telephonic gossips helping me cut short my phone bills. She even avoids talking to me and it is such a state of peace being home these days! I am just loving these days of my life. I cant express how happy I am. I just wish to live these days for a month! I am ready to pay extra but please don't deliver her denture before a month."

What do I say?!

When Patient is a Gujarati Businessman...

Good morning!

What a start to the day!

Today morning when I enter my clinic I was filled with joy! I see 5 patients in my OPD waiting room on my arrival. This is pretty unusual with my dental practice. I enter my cabin, pray to god, prepare myself for seeing the patients and ask my receptionist to guide the first patient to my consultation cabin.

My first patient for the day, Mr. Shah, enters my cabin with a complaint of yellow brown stains on his teeth. I take relevant case history, examine him, and advice him to get his teeth cleaned (scaling and polishing) and maintain his oral hygiene. I started explaining and educating the patient about the therapy but the patient stopped me in between and asked, "what would be the cost of this treatment?" I gave a smile and replied; "Rs.1000/- sir". Listening to my reply, he immediately got down from the dental chair and went outside without saying anything. To my astonishment, he had even left his case file on my table. And before I could understand anything, he re-entered my cabin with his entire family (all 5 members sitting in the opd waiting area). And he says, "We all want to get our teeth cleaned just now. We shall pay your bills in cash at once. Tell me the final rates. Rs.3200/- for 3 adults and 2 kids, lets make it a package! What do you say?" I was shocked!

Ice Breaking

Hello Friends!

It has now been over 1.5 years practicing in my own private dental clinic. And to my astonishment, I have a new learning experience with patients each day! I try and communicate most of my experiences with my bestie Madhuri and she loves listening to those.

Few days back, I was sharing one of my experiences with Madhuri and in the course of our communication she suggested me to pen down my experiences. I thought for a while about her suggestion, and finally this blog was born! Thank you Madhuri for such a creative suggestion!

This is my first blogging experience and so I am excited as well as nervous. But I am happy that I will now be able to communicate and share my experiences with a larger group of friends!

Comments and suggestions are most welcomed in this zone!

Take care and have a nice day....
